Abstract: Red rainbowfish, Glossolepis incisus, is endemic at lake Sentani, Irian Jaya. Males of G. Incisus have an unique bright red coloration often with fleck of silver. Therefore, this species has a high economical value as ornamental fish that intensively caused the exploitation of this fish. On the other hand, there is very lack of genetic information such as chromosome of this fish. A genetic information is needed for aquaculture development. The crtogenetic study of rainbowfish (G. incisus) was focussed on karyotype to find out the information of chromosome. The research was conducted at Laboratory of Fish Breeding and Genetics, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, IPB, Bogor in March-June 2000. Chromosome plates were prepared by solid tissue technique (using 100 larvae) and analysed after staining with giemsa solution. Diloid chromosomes number of G. incisus are 2n=48). Karyotyping of this fish showed that 48 chromosomes consisted of 7 pairs subtelocentric (ST) (no. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8) and 17 pairs telocentric (T)
